Character Name: Matthew Williams
Country: Canada.
Age: 17.
House: Ravenclaw.
Gender: Male.
Personality: Matthew is quiet and unobtrusive. He is so shy that it can be crippling for him sometimes just to be included in the antics of others. Despite this flaw in his demeanor, Matthew is flawlessly kind to everyone, incredibly polite, and tends to be no-nonsense about his studies. In fact, in his struggle to find acceptance from others, the teen has a difficult time saying “no”. This is especially troublesome for him when he finds himself being drawn into situations that put him and his academic career in jeopardy – normally because he somehow caught the attention of a particular boy outside of his House that uses their strange resemblance to said boy’s advantage.
Having to put up with being accused of pulling pranks or doing things that were quite beyond his ability, Matthew has developed more of a spine as of late. He tends to keep things internalized until it gets to the point where things explode out of him in a rush. These instances normally leave him feeling initially satisfied, then eventually guilty. Matthew is still trying to find the right balance between maintaining his kind persona and speaking up for himself.
Some might claim that he takes himself too seriously. However, his successes at testing and exceeding marks in academics speak enough for his determination. Matthew has a great passion for literature due to his childhood and prefers the musty leather of aged books rather than the more physical activities of his fellow students. He is more likely to be lurking on the outskirts of the crowd, sometimes looking on, sometimes oblivious. The antics of others will often garner a tiny, enigmatic smile from him – which either means that he is amused, or he thinks that they are utterly idiotic.
Background: Having grown up in a relatively quiet neighborhood, Matthew had always felt that he was doomed to become just like the rest of the people that he knew; trapped in the monotony of a boring life. He had come to terms with it early in his childhood, not being as active or extroverted as the other children in his area, Matthew turned to literature as a means to provide himself an outlet for dreams that he felt were unrealistic.
Then one day he was sitting alone in the local library when he witnessed a very bizarre event: Matthew began to see creatures that should not exist. The mythical beings that he had read about in the pages of his novels had come to life right before his eyes. Of course he didn’t tell anyone out of fear that they would dismiss him as crazy. He kept the secret for years and did his best to tune out their presence, outright ignoring them whenever he caught their interest. It wasn’t until the day that he received a bizarre letter addressed to him that Matthew understood that what he had mistakenly believed was insanity was actually a gift given to very few individuals.
Coming to the school, he eventually discovered that the professor of his House had the same gift. Though Matthew desperately wished to confide in the adult, the youth kept it to himself instead. When he saw Professor Arthur interacting with them, Matthew would politely avert his eyes and bury his face further into the books that he always kept his nose in.
Matthew has heard many of the rumors of dark forces moving in the world, though he has fortunately managed to avoid any encounters with them. He has an admiration for those brave enough to stand up to evil. Despite not having had to test his skills against that sort of adversity, Matthew’s understanding of his craft and extensive studies have tempered him with a quiet strength that could one day pass the test.

It was happening again. Matthew’s eyes crept open halfway as he stirred from sleep, focusing on the ceiling overhead as he tried to determine what had woken him up. The boy caught his breath, holding it as he heard the sounds of something moving around inside of his closet on the opposite side of his bedroom. His fists curled into the fabric of his blankets as Matthew tried to find the courage to look and see what had come to disturb him. His head slowly lifted off the pillow, hair in a wild mess across his face as the boy peered towards where the noises had come from.
Ah. So he was back again.
“Mom? Mom? Mom!” Matthew called out until he got a response from his maternal parent. He sat curled up in a ball at the headboard of his bed, blankets drawn clear up to his chin as he stared wide-eyed at the door to his closet, an uneasy tremor quaking through his entire body. When the door to his bedroom opened and the highlighted figure of his half-asleep mother stepped into the room, Matthew pointed a small finger at the closet. “There’s a man in my closet again.”
“Oh, Matthew.” She sighed and soothed him just as she always did when he became frightened. As his mother let her hand run down through the silk of his hair, she murmured with thin tolerance. “For the last time, honey… There’s no man in your closet. No one is in the house. You were probably just having a nightmare again. Now get back to sleep, okay, sweetheart?”
Matthew reluctantly unwound himself under her urgings. He settled back down to lay flat on the mattress, staring up at her as she patted him gently and left the room. When she was gone, the boy flopped over on his mattress. Matthew pulled the blankets up over his head in an effort to keep himself from getting drawn back into staring at the closet. It wasn’t so much that the man was particularly frightening; it was just disturbing to have his own personal space invaded by something that should not have been there. In the darkness of his room, he whispered harshly, “I wish that you would just leave.”
The elf in the closet glanced up from where he had been rifling through Matthew’s clothes, prepared to steal a couple of socks from some of the pairs that had been bundled up. Tilting his head, the creature blinked curiously at the boy in the bed, then shrugged and returned to his works. “Feh. Kids.”
