Character Name:
Lovino 'Romano' Vargas
Country:
Italy
Age:
16
House:
HuffelPuff
Gender:
♂
Personality:
It is fairly easy to describe Romano with one word; Pessimist. He always has been one and seemingly will always be as well, there doesn't seem to much that Romano thinks highly of, and every situation is simply a new excuse for the Italian to pick at and complain about, until there's nothing positive for anyone left to say about it. It's a strong trait of Romano that will show itself at any given moment. You would think the guy couldn't ever be happy, with his many complaints, his constant frowning and rude choice of words. Maybe. In reality he just finds there's little to be happy about, and he can't hold onto anything positive to safe his life. His generally grumpy attitude, with its matching expression gets Romano some complaints, which, aside from a snarky comment, he seems to ignore it.
This is the only side he seems to be showing to others, which makes him appear as a cold and bitter individual. But if you dare to stick by him long enough, or if you gain his trust, you will see there's more to the boy. Romano is in reality pretty lonely and sensitive, a simple guy, who has learned that keeping up that angry mask was the best way to safe himself, from pain and disappointment. He acts like a child, with his many tantrums and demands, of which you'll learn are only to gain your attention. Instead of pulling people closer, he will push them away, and expect them to reach back out.
He can be nice, and truly cares for those who he has gotten comfortable with. Romano just hasn't learned yet how to properly show his affection. While his mouth is shut tight when it comes to emotions, his eyes, expression and body language betray how he feels straight away. He never did seem to realize how much of a open book he actually is.
One could argue his current behavior is to blame on his childhood, he did used to be a somewhat happy kid in the first few years of his life. But no one would be able to remember those days. Which brings us to another point, Romano has never appeared to be a strong country, in terms of fighting. He's a coward who more then often would run to someone else for help or safety. Or he would just run to avoid problems and danger in general. He doesn't seem to like fighting for himself, unless he absolutely has to. Romano prefers others doing his dirty work for him and wants for them to come trough for him whenever he asks, while he himself can either be unreliable, or simply completely useless. Doesn't mean Romano doesn't try, whenever he can get off his lazy ass that is, he just fails at what he does.
All in all he can be affectionate, in his own way, and he has his heart on the right place. His bad temper, bad mood and distrust for most others just makes it difficult for him to show this properly.
Background:
Romano was born roughly six years after Feliciano. Unlike his brother, Romano didn't have the luxury to enjoy the peaceful family life. The boy was still fairly young when their parents had decided to put them in their grandfather's care. Romano had difficulties coping with this sudden change in his life, he didn't understand what was going on, and he felt like their parents had simply abandoned him and his older brother.
It wasn't easy for Romano to adapt to his new surroundings. Feliciano's departure to the Mountaintop Institute didn't make it any easier for him, and he began to keep to himself. A lot of anger and frustration began to build up inside of him, making him a difficult child to handle. Soon enough his parents and brother were nothing but vague figures, dancing around in the boy's memory. Romano would always tell himself that he didn't care about them, because they didn't care about him either.
Now Romano knew that he would see his brother again, someday, but that was no comfort to him, he began to resent his family instead.
The resistance had moved in on Pangaea during the years, and many in the boy's surroundings began to speculate, about a possible ending of the war. This itself was enough reason for Romano's grandfather to keep the boy at home, where he would be safe.
Then finally the day came when the witch was defeated, which brought such relief to everyone. Things changed, making life for the rest of the year easier to get trough. Hogwarts was being restored and invited students to attend. Romano was one of many who had gotten a letter, which made him feel unsure on what to do at first. Now it wasn't that he didn't know of magic, of course he did, but to leave the last person he was familiar with, and to leave the place where he grew up at, wasn't easy.
RP Sample:
The big yellow dorm room was very welcoming, and when you could look past the fact that the amount yellow was rather obnoxious, it was also a room that harbored a warm feeling. Even calming, in a way. Despite this, Romano wasn't happy being there.
There was no use getting worked up over it now, he figured. He'd scream his profanities inside his head, complain to himself quietly and he grumbled on occasion, walking over to one of the fat armchairs in the room, falling back onto one. At least there was something of comfort around him, which was exactly what he needed. Take in a deep breath...and slowly release it. His body instantly relaxed, more than happy that the tension was gone. Hell, Romano hadn't even realized how tense and uptight he'd been all this time, but whatever, he was done with that now.
